King of Wonders

Hi friends,

Hope social isolation is treating you well. Today I wanted to talk about one of my all time favourite songs, King of Wonders.

Part of this is because of the story behind the song. Martin Smith (Delirious) felt that God was calling him to gather worship leaders together to write an album and give all the proceeds to charity. So he contacted worship leaders from around the world including Tim Hughes, Matt Redman, Darlene Zschech, Michael W. Smith, Chris Tomlin and a whole bunch more and they gathered together in Scotland and wrote some songs with the idea that all the profits would be given to charity. Out of this time came a wonderful story which you can read in their book (https://www.koorong.com/product/the-art-of-compassion-compassionart_9780340979259)!

For me I love the opening line;

We could try to count the stars but You already know them each by name

For me this perfectly encapsulates our amazing God; so big that he has knowledge of the expanse of the universe and yet personal in the way he knows each of the star’s names! And it’s the same with us as he sees the whole Earth and yet seeks a relationship with each and every one of us.

The chorus is simple but powerful.

King of wonders, we stand amazed

There’s no other, other than you

King of wonders, You know the way to our hearts

And the more we see, the more we love You

The truth ‘the more we see, the more we love You’ I see in my life every day. As God reveals more of himself in his word, but also in his provision for me, his grace for me and his love for me I cannot help but love him more!

On a side note, I love the chord progression of the song. It dances around standard patterns but subtle changes sneak in that makes it really interesting to play (and hopefully to sing.) I find the harmony to the melody of the song particularly enjoyable to sing and the song lends itself to being sung in different ways; it’s easy to repeat the chorus or spend time reflecting in the pre-chorus.

Hopefully you enjoy this one too, here’s a version of it on YouTube (https://youtu.be/VqpcXTDlLaY). It’s also available in our Spotify playlist here (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5b4XkZUPzCWC3yHNT7nxfi?si=1WDiVkttSKatBHDVH36HzA). We recently posted “How to spotify” in our Facebook group. Have a look for it online and if you get stuck give us a yell!

Bless you!
