Great Are You Lord

Berowrabaps   -

There are some really simple and yet really profound songs that we sing, for me Great are you Lord is one of the best examples of these. It’s one of those songs that repeats itself regularly throughout so I don’t feel like I need to read the words as I’m singing it, it’s much easier to sing it from memory. As such, I find myself able to focus on God and what he’s saying to me which has led to some really special times of worship.

You give life, You are love

You bring light to the darkness

You give hope, You restore

Every heart that is broken

Great are You, Lord

A simple verse with a simple focus. The whole song is centred around the greatness of God and here we see God’s greatness in what he brings; life, love, light, hope, restoration. What more could we hope for? I can think of thousands of times God has brought light, life and hope to my life and what else could my response be?

It’s Your breath in our lungs

So we pour out our praise

We pour out our praise

It’s Your breath in our lungs

So we pour out our praise to You only

The chorus really then leans onto the truth that everything we have is from God, even the very breath we breathe. Therefore should we not use that breath to praise our God who gives us life!

And all the earth will shout Your praise

Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing

Great are You, Lord

The bridge then is a great crescendo of all of this until it is all the earth shouting God’s praise. What a fantastic image! This is matched with a really fun musical drive that plays around with using the major to drive the first few repeats before driving through a second progression which as a musician I really enjoy!

It really is a well worked song, the refrain of ‘Great are you Lord’ works really well, it’s a simple truth that I find really comforting to rest in. I believe this is a song our church loves to sing and I’d love to hear what parts you love! Throw a comment on facebook so we can talk about it!

If you’re looking for a version of it there’s one here and another where it’s tagged on to another great song “anthem” here.

As with most of our songs you should be able to find it in our spotify playlist as well!

Many blessings,
