How Great is Your Love – Phil Wickham
From the darkness, I called Your name
Into darkness, Your mercy came
You called me out, lifted me up
How great is Your love
You bore my weakness, You took my shame
Buried my burdens in fields of grace
You called me out, lifted me up
How great is Your love
From the heights of heaven You stepped down to earth
Innocent perfection, gave Your life for us
We are amazed, we stand in awe
For we have been changed by the power of the cross
How great, how great, how great is Your love
How great, how great, how great is Your love
How great, how great, how great is Your love for us
In Your kindness, You lead me home
In Your presence, where I belong
You called me out, lifted me up
How great is Your love
There has never been, there will never be
A God like You, a love so true
Friends, this week we’re looking at a song called How Great is Your Love.
This song was at one point on our team’s list of “we should play this soon in church” and so thought we should talk about it before we do!
Like so many of the songs we sing, this simply celebrates God’s love for us. The chorus is simple, but as I continue to rest in it’s truth I find hope, peace, strength, renewal, grace, mercy, and so much more!
The song starts with where we were; Peter says we were lost in darkness before we called into God’s glorious light; before Jesus took our guilt and shame and set us free. And we see that journey in the verses of this song. I particularly love the image of the fields of grace, as if there is a place where grace flowers. And it was in that space where God took all which weighed us down.
The reality is that we have been changed by the cross, by Jesus, by his love for us; and this leaves us astounded, stunned, confused, overjoyed. Amazed.
Musically I love that pre-chorus, the build is fantastic and leads to what really is the focus of the song; the greatness of our God’s love for us.
For me though, my favourite part is the bridge. For in all of my years, through hard times and good, I can say confidently; there has never been a God like him, and never a love that has proved itself to be so true to me.

Many blessings,
