Good good Father, Chris Tomlin
I’ve heard a thousand stories of what they think you’re like
But I’ve heard the tender whispers of love in the dead of night
And you tell me that you’re pleased
And that I’m never alone
You’re a good good father
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
I’ve seen many searching for answers far and wide
But I know we’re all searching for answers only you provide
‘Cause you know just what we need
Before we say a word
Because you are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us
Oh, it’s love so undeniable
I, I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable
I, I can hardly think
As you call me deeper still
Into love, love, love
Well let’s get this out of the way out at the start. It’s pretty cliche to pull this out on Father’s Day and yet equally there’s something beautiful about singing it on Father’s day so we’ll just have to keep dealing with it for now until someone writes the next Father’s Day song!
But what a great song, lyrically, thematically, musically; it’s no surprise that this song is sung across the world. The first verse is particularly great in my opinion, I love how it starts with what others say God is like, what they think of him. I can’t help but think of the many articles and speeches that have been made about how terrible God is; and yet here we sing of the one, true God who whispers sweet truths to us, who sings songs of love over us. The Father who never leaves us.
The Father who we’re all searching for in one way or another, the ever present answer to the deepest questions of life.
The repetition of the chorus gets this song stuck in my head so quickly and for such a long time. But are there much better words to have following you around your day? First affirming who God is, the good, good Father and then our identity in him; the ones who are loved by him.
And as we reflect briefly on Father’s day, some of us have had great Dads, some have fallen short of our hopes, our expectations. My hope for us today is that we will remember our heavenly Father, the one who always brings good gifts for his children, the one who is always with his children and the one who loves us, just as we are, because of who he is.
Have a listen here, and as always much love to you all and happy Father’s day
